Children and AI — a guide for parents

Age limits, AI companions, fake images and how to talk about it at home.

Check the age limits

Most AI services require users to be at least 13, and under-18s often need parental permission; some are for adults only. Read the terms of the app your child uses — and use the family or teen settings where they exist.

AI “friends” and companions

Chatbots that act as friends or partners are designed to keep users talking. For lonely or vulnerable teenagers this can replace real relationships or lead to harmful conversations. Ask which apps they use and what they talk about — without judging.

Fake intimate images

AI apps can turn an ordinary photo into a fake nude. Making or sharing such images of others is harmful and can be a criminal offence, and from 2 December 2026 the EU prohibits AI systems built for this. Tell children: if it happens to them, it is not their fault — come to you, keep evidence, report it.

Family rules that work

  • No personal data, photos or addresses in chatbots
  • AI helps with homework — it doesn’t do it
  • Check surprising “facts” together
  • Devices out of bedrooms at night
  • Talk about what you saw online — regularly, not only when something goes wrong

Where to get help

In Slovenia, Safe.si offers advice for parents and children and the TOM helpline (116 111) listens to children and teenagers. Report illegal content and serious threats to the police.

Key takeaways
  • Check age limits and use family settings.
  • Talk openly and often — curiosity beats bans.
  • Fake intimate images: not the victim’s fault; keep evidence and report.
Try it

Do the AI knowledge test together with your child — and compare results.
